About the Producer

Gruppo Mezzacorona is located in Trento’s Piana Rotaliana, near the town of Mezzocorona. The Group includes Cantine Mezzacorona, the parent company, Cantine Rotari, which produces Trento DOC Metodo Classico sparkling wines, and Feudo Arancio, based in Sambuca di Sicilia.

Founded in 1904, Gruppo Mezzacorona boasts 1,600 members and 2,800 hectares of vineyards in Trentino-Alto Adige’s finest grape-growing areas.

Mezzacorona is the largest Italian producer of Teroldego Rotaliano and produced the very first bottle of this wine back in 1971. It is also the foremost Italian producer of Lagrein, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer.

Mezzacorona agronomists contributed to the first experiments and to the spread of the practice of sexual confusion, which is now widely used in integrated pest management to eradicate insects harmful to vines without the use of pesticides.

The winery's current headquarters, the “Cittadella del Vino”, was completed in August 2004 to a design by architect Alberto Cecchetto. The design of its "wave" roof echoes the succession of vineyards cultivated with pergolas.

Wine Spectator has listed Mezzacorona as one of Italy's 100 best wineries.

Vineyard

The red grapes grow on the granitic soils of the Dolomites’ inward sloping hillsides. Here, the decomposition of the surrounding narrow valley cliffs, and the alluvial deposits left by glaciers and the ever-dominant Adige River, lend unique mineral overtones to grapes such as Teroldego, Marzemino and Merlot.

Then at night (“Di notte”) a particular cooling effect is experienced as cool air spills down from the Dolomites and - following the course of the magnificent Adige River - places a blanket of cooling freshness throughout the valley. Because of this valley’s unique geography, the amount of reflected light is such that, even with sunlight hours that start later in the morning and stop earlier in the evening because of the surrounding high mountains, a heat-sink effect is retained throughout summer.

Such peculiar thermal variations produce grapes that are at once rich and juicy, but also perfumed with a mountain floral character that is hard to find in many red wines. The resulting freshness endows this wine with a wonderful structural tension and highly articulate fruity expression.

Vinification

The Teroldego and Marzemino are fermented in the classic red winemaking style at 25-30°C for 12 to 13 days and with the addition of selected yeasts.

Ageing

Teroldego and Merlot are separately matured for six months in lightly toasted, three years old French oak barrels. The three wines are blended in stainless steel and set to rest for up to six months before bottling.

Tasting Notes

Mezzacorona Di Notte is a unique Mezzacorona red blend that expresses the aromatic richness of two noble varietals of the Dolomites, Teroldego and Marzemino, combined with an international varietal, Merlot, for elegance and softness. Teroldego, with its profound flavours of red currants, blackberry, and blueberry, provides a full-bodied structure. Marzemino brings a pleasant juicy character that creates a soft, velvety, palate-pleasing wine. This blend is balanced by the addition of Merlot which adds aromatic notes of vanilla and cocoa.
